The Vaal and Vaal Dam area |
|||
Just an hour south of Johannesburg is the Vaal Dam. The Vaal dam covers over 300km square and is South Africa's third largest dam by volume and is also the largest by size. Three provinces make up the Vaal dam area, namely Gauteng, Free State and Mpumalanga.
Boating and yachting facilities are abundant on this dam for landlocked Gauteng residents. There are also rapids to be found in the area. The area of Parys lies within the 'Vredefort' dome, the remains of an ancient crater. The crater was formed 2000 million years ago and the area within the crater is a World Heritage Site.
