Modimolle is the hub of the Waterberg area and close by are the Waterberg mountains which are stretched out for
over 5 000 km². These ancient mountains offer the traveller some beautiful views of unspoilt lands including typical bushveld landscapes.
The area of Modimolle (formerly Nylstroom until 2002) is famed for its grape farming as well as the annual Druiwefees that is held in the town, attracting visitors from far afield. Modimolle is around 140km from Pretoria and is easily accessed via highways from both Johannesburg and Pretoria and is close to Bela Bela (Warmbaths).
The area was named 'Nylstroom' back in the mid 1860's by the Jerusalemm Trekkers who thought they
had found the Nile river!
The Waterberg Biopshere is approximately 15,000km² and was the first region in the northern section of South Africa to be name a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO. The first human ancestors could have been living in the Waterberg area near on 3 million years ago. Skeletons have been found in the area that could indicate that home erectus knowingly moved into the higher areas of the Waterberg to catch game in the summer months.
Attractions in the area include hot springs, Nylsvlei Wetlands and the Makapans Valley Heritahe site.
The areas offer the tourist something from both worlds, modern convience and and rustic bushveld living. Driving to the area from Johannesburg and Pretoria is around 2.5 hrs (to Modimolle) and ease of access makes for a closeby break from the city
and the climate is perfect for those winter getaways!
