The Vredefort crater is the largest impact crater on earth, this is located in the Free State and is so name after the town of Vredefort that is located near its centre. IN 2005 the Vredefort Dome was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The asteroid that hit in the area was estimated to have been one of the largest to ever hit the planet. The crater is approx 250-300km in diameter and is estimated to be well over 3000 million years old!
