The Waterberg Biopshere is approximately 15,000km² and was the first region in the northern section of South Africa to be named a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, the general area is approximately 3 hours from Johannesburg.The first human ancestors could have been living in the Waterberg area near on 3 million years ago. Skeletons have been found in the area that could indicate that home erectus knowingly moved into the higher areas of the Waterberg to catch game in the summer months. The area is richly abundant with game reserves and tranquil bushveld settings, places to stay in the beautiful Waterberg area including areas such as (Vaalwater), Modimolle(Nylstroom),Mookgophong(Naboomspruit) and Bela Bela (Warmbaths). The area also includes the Welgevonden Private Game Reserve that is home to the Big five as well as many more mammals and bird species. Parys is situated approx 1.5 hrs from Johannesburg and is close to the famous Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site (a crater created by an meteorite well over 2000 million years ago!). The area is on the banks of the Vaal river and offers accommodation as well as leisure activities close by.
The town itself has restaurants, antique shops, coffee shops and other exciting and interesting attractions. Accommodation in Parys varies from self catering, to B&B to conference venues and teambuilding venues. The area is also home to numerous private game farms. With the area being near the Vaal river there are also watersports available such as river rafting and kayaking. The Parys area also hosts the annual Crater Cruise mountain bike race in October.
Dinokengis located NE of Pretoria and offers some excellent accommodation in Dinokeng. The name Dinokeng means the 'Place of Rivers' and is located in a catchment area of the Olifants and Limpopo Rivers. Broadly speaking Dinokeng includes the Roodeplaat and Rust de Winter dam areas as well as towns such as Cullinan,,Hammanskraal,,Refilwe, Rayton and Moloto and . There are many tourist attractions in the area and is well worth visiting as it is a close drive to both major cities. The Sammy Marks Museum is an authentic Victorian mansion set amongst massive jacaranda trees and has significance as an historic home, then there are the buildings within the Willem Prinsloo Agricultural Museum , the village of Rust de Winter and the remains of the Wallmansthal Mission, taking one back in time. The village of Cullinan offers the visitor a glimpse of Victorian and Edwardian architecture and jacaranda-and-oak lined avenues, transporting the visitor into the dimanond boom times!
