The Waterberg Biopshere is approximately 15,000km² and was the first region in the northern section of South Africa to be named a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO, the general area is approximately 3 hours from Johannesburg.The first human ancestors could have been living in the Waterberg area near on 3 million years ago. Skeletons have been found in the area that could indicate that home erectus knowingly moved into the higher areas of the Waterberg to catch game in the summer months. Parys is situated approx 1.5 hrs from Johannesburg and is close to the famous Vredefort Dome World Heritage Site (a crater created by an meteorite well over 2000 million years ago!). The area is on the banks of the Vaal river and offers accommodation as well as leisure activities close by.
